INTRODUCTION

Welcome to our extended Richardson family history overview. Its primary focus is to provide information about our many Lead Ore Mining family relatives, mainly from Cumberland, Northumberland and Durham counties in Northern England, from as far back as possible, to their patterns of emigration to the Victorian Gold Fields in the 1850s and 1860s.

Kindly note - This site is intentionally designed for use on standard computers, laptops, notepads etc., with reasonble sized screens ( not mobile phones ), with larger than average font size and images, for the benefit of all researchers.

OBJECTIVES

Your web host has over many months of research, attained and presented a broad array of information and images, stemming from relatively recent family recollections, to back as far as confirmable records can be traced. Almost all of these daring yung men and women and children, originated from a background of hundreds of years of Lead Ore Mining in Northern England, before they ventured to our Gold fields. Most of our current Richardson descendants living in Australia, are city or township dwellers nowadays, yet have probably unknowingly descended from a diverse array of tough, strong, hard working Gold Diggers primarily from near the Ballarat, Castlemaine, and Beechworth regions of Victoria. Although it is not possible to quantify their varying degrees of success of these Gold Diggers, the vast majority of the family members in this study who emigrated, followed the trend of the Calvert and Coulson families, to become innovative farmers, graziers, and a few entreprenaurs, who moved to the lush green pastoral region of East Gippsland.

Another objective of this web site, is to advise and link together, both some early family Lead ore mining family members in Northern U.K., along with long lost family descendants, who emigrated to join in the Gold Rush in Victoria, Australia, and maybe lost touch with their distant cousins Down Unda, or found no other way of tracing family members. Early email feedback from this site, has already brought together relatives previously unknown to each other, from various states of Australia, and it is envisaged similar reuniting occurances will happen in Northern UK Countys too.

For those interested in some basic information of the Lead Mining industry in the mid 1800s around Cumberland, Northumberland and Durham in the U.K., the following link has been provided.

Background into Lead Ore Mining in Northern U.K.

FAMILY MOVEMENTS FROM THE UK TO AUSTRALIA

Almost all of our Lead Ore Mining cousins departed from Liverpool on sailing ships or steam clippers
per photo circa 1860 from the Liverpool Museum.

The following family members are all sons or daughters of Lead Ore Miners unless otherwise stated, primarily from our focus region of Cumberland, Northumberland and Durham, listed in approximate chronological order of arrival. The most noticable exception to these focus parameters is the Rowe family, originlly from Cornwall near the southern tip of England, linked by the marriage of John Rowe to Margaret Ann Vipond in Victoria in 1877.

As was often the case in the gold rush days, the male partner headed out on a long coach ride or walk to the Port of Liverpool, traversed the high seas to Hobson Bay in Victoria, and worked the gold fields near Ballarat or Bendigo. Then when able financially, and reasonably well established, they sent home for their wife or fiancée, and children if they had any. There were some other common later instances, where the entire family made the decision tp travel the daring and usually 3 months sea voyage together, sometimes with cousins and in-laws or friends, then linked up on the gold fields with other family members, or old neighbours and mining mates from the UK.

END OF OUR PASSENGER LIST - 1884 IS TIME TO DRAW THE LINE

Obviously aware there are probably hundreds, if not thousands of other family members of this era, closely or more distantly related by marriage or partnership, back home in the UK and in Victoria, however for reasons of practicality, the line has to be drawn somewhere. Only a small number of sons and daughters, nieces and nephews etc. of some of these generations have been selectively included, in order a better picture of understanding be conveyed.

CLARIFICATION OF OUR RICHARDSON FAMILY TIES AND CONNECTIONS

To briefly explain our family ties within the realms of inter-related mining family names, (highlighted in bold) and their inclusion in the extended Family Tree Listings which follow, two of your web host's grand parents, were John Victor (Jack) Richardson, and Sarah Ann (Annie) Liddell. Jack Richardson was a direct descendant of the many Lead Ore mining families of Joseph Richardson (born 1721 in Alston) and Ann Metcalf (also born in Alston), and Annie Liddell has been traced back to the parents of both Joshua Liddell (born 1808 at Ninebanks) and Mary Coulson (born 1814 at Allendale).

On Annie Liddell's side, her father was born on the Gold Fields at Scarsdale in 1875, with the outstanding moniker of William Coulson Calvert Liddell, which basically outlines our direct ancestoral connections to Coulson and Calvert families, per the maiden names of his mother (Mary Calvert from Allendale) and his grandmother on his father's side (Mary Coulson also from Allendale). William Coulson Calvert Liddell had two aunts by marriage, who were Jane Lee (born 1832 in Alston), and Ann Parker (born 1841 in East Allendale). William Coulson Calvert Liddell's aunt Sarah Calvert married Thomas Broadwood (born in 1831 in Allendale), his oldest uncle William Calvert (born in 1834 in Kirk Haugh) married Catherine Hewitson (born in Kirk Linton in 1827), and his other Calvert uncle, John Russell Calvert (born 1831 in Stotgill) married Jane Coulson (born 1833 in Ninebanks).

On Jack Richardson's side, his mother was Eleanor (Ellen) Vipond (born 1850 in Alston). Jack's father Emerson Richardson had two sisters who survived to adulthood and both married in Victoria, being Sarah Richardson (born in Alston in 1850) who married twice, William Bell (born Allendale in 1839) and Joseph Race (born 1838 in Stanhope Durham), and also Elizabeth Richardson (born Alston in 1861) who married Robert Cochrane (born in Bamburgh in 1853).

NB. Robert Cochrane's family was from Bamburgh on the east coast of northern England, a bit over 80 miles from our main target region of Alston and Allendale, and his father Henry James Cochrane, was actually a Coal Miner from a predominantly farming family. However, Henry James Cochrane had 4 brothers who all emigrated to Australia specifically to participate in the Victorian Gold Rush, hence the inclusion of a Cochrane Family Tree Listing.

FAMILY TREE LISTINGS

Naturally both the Richardson and Liddell Family Trees have been extensively investigated. However, as a number of our family members intermarried on the Victorian Goldfields and in East Gippsland, we also found a range of similar family ties by marriage back in Cumberland and Northumberland in England, therefore our research expanded accordingly, as below.

Can you possible envisage booking a 2-3 month voyage on a sailing boat or a steam clipper in the 1860s to the other side of the world, with nothing more than a suitcase of belongings, and a dream to strike it rich on the Gold Fields in Victoria ? This is the very situation many of our Lead Ore Miners confronted, as a result of the downturn of the Lead Mining industry in England in the 1850s & 1860s. Fortunately in particular, some of our Calvert, Coulson, Liddell, and Broadwood relations became heavily involved in two very successful Gold Mines near Ballarat in the early 1860s, being the Try Again and Cleft in the Rock Gold Mines at Devils Kitchen / Piggoreet, about 20 kilometres south west of Ballarat.

As with the Cleft in the Rock Gold mine, the adjacent Try Again Gold Mine had William Calvert as the major company shareholder, and Annie Liddell's great uncle John Liddell, also investing in this very productive and successful gold Mine at the Devils Kitchen via Piggoreet in 1861. By the way John Liddell and his wife Jane Lee owned the Try Again Hotel at Piggoreet at this time, so there was probably no shortage of Ballarat Beer for the family Diggers at this time in history.

The second map above, Courtesy Google maps, shows Hobsons Bay / Port Phillip (nowadays Port Melbourne) marked A, and Ballarat marked B, a distance of approximately 110 kilometers.
